MAY 2012

MORRIS DANCING

The first day of May is known as May Day. It is the time of the year when warmer weather begins and flowers and trees start to blossom. Traditionally English May Day celebrations include Morris Dancing. This is a traditional English form of folk dancing performed by groups of men and women.
The dancing is very lively and accompanied by an accordion player, a fiddle player or a noisy band with a drum.
Morris dancers are often dressed in white with coloured belts across their chests. There are usually six or eight dancers arranged in two lines or in a circle facing each other. The dancers may carry white handkerchiefs that they shake or short sticks that they bang against each other as they dance.

A Word from our President

The Charlemagne bookshop at Toulon has invited us to a special event to meet the English authoress, Anne Perry. Authoress of a large number of novels, Anne Perry is known above all for her police stories set in Victorian times. During her visit to Toulon, she will be presenting her book entitled “Dorchester Terrace” translated into French, which is the latest in the series “Charlotte et Thomas Pitt”, which is set in London during the years 1880-1890.
This is a rendezvous not to be missed.

Please note that it has not been possible to organise the afternoon at the Hyeres race course on 5th May, mentioned in the April Programme.
